Benefits

What seasons do Pogie Lites work the best?

Pogie Lites work great in all seasons.

We've used them in a wide array of riding styles and temperatures from -10 ° snowstorms to +80 ° July rains.

YOU are the deciding factor by regulating your hand temperature.

How do Pogie Lites work in inclement weather?

Freakin' Awesome!

Not only do they keep your hands warm, but they help keep your hands dry and clean.

caveat - if you are riding for hours in the rain, the Pogie Lites will get wet and droop. Water running down from your arms will probably run into the pogie too. you can cinch down the collar shock-cord to stop most of the rain, but gravity and water are hard to beat. This is the same for any pogie on the market.

Over time and use, they may lose their water repellancy. in that case just spray them down with some water-proof spray.

Why do Pogie Lites work so well in cold temperatures?

Pogie Lites work surprisingly well in cold temperatures even though they are not insulated.

As you build up heat from riding, the air inside the pogie warms up and creates a micro-climate that will keep your hands warm in most temperatures.

They operate under the same principal as a wind-breaker jacket that retains heat from your body to keep you warm.

The key is to keep your hands from sweating. If your hands get too hot in, simply pull your hands out for a moment or a few minutes and ride with your hands atop the Pogie or roll it back all the way or just a little.

See our FAQ on Conduction.

Why do Pogie Lites work so well in warm temperatures?

Pogie Lites are not insulated.

They are like a wind-breaker for your hands.

We use them in 80 ° July rains as no one likes soaked gloves and wet hands.

Roll them back or remove them and pack them away if the temperatures are too warm. This is a feature only found in Pogie Lites.

What do you mean by "Temperature Control"?

The KEY to keeping comfortable is ensuring your hands don't overheat and making sure they don't get too cold.

You are stuck in other pogies and Winter gloves. Once you start sweating, you know you have to keep going or stop and get warm somewhere.

Unlike all other pogies, you have options where to put your hands.

If you feel your hands getting warm, you might be wearing too heavy of a glove. You never want your hands to be hot.

Pulling your hands out of the Pogie and riding with them atop the Pogie for a few minutes can cool your hand off. Once cooled, put them back into the Pogie. Repeat as necessary.

This process is the gospel to keeping your hands comfortable.

Also see our FAQ on Conduction and how your hands can get cold from the in inside.

Will Pogie Lites keep my grips and shifters clean?

Yes! You'd be amazed how dirty your shifters, grips, gloves and hand can get especially in nasty conditions

We wish we would have had Pogie Lites years ago after seeing all the components we had to replace from the elements and the Oklahoma red dirt.

What else can Pogie Lites be used for?

We've used them for many other things over the years.

  • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing - they attach right on the poles!
  • Foot coverings while tent camping on cool nights
  • Camp footwear - around camp or during the night when ya gotta go
  • Food and Supply bag - Cinch one side up, throw the other cord over your bars, stock up at the store, and then ride to your campsite.
  • Trash bag - pack in and pack out. If you forgot a trash bag, pogies will fit the bill in a pinch.

Installation

What bars will Pogie Lites work with?

Most handlbars will work with Pogie Lites and it is usually the shifter cables and they way they are routed that cause the Pogie Lite not to fit.

We've used the tested them on many types of Straight, Drop and Jones and Jones-type bars.

If you have bar-ends or other accessories near your grips or shifters, the may affect the way the Pogie Lite fits.

See the Size FAQ the the Product photos and reviews if you have sizing concerns and if you still have concerns, send us an email with photos of your bar set up and we can determine the fitment.

Note - We will not make custom modifications for special bars and cable routing.

How do I install Pogie Lites on Drop bars?

There are 3 ways to install the Pogie Lite onto Drop bars depending on your riding style

1. I mostly ride in the hoods
2. I mostly ride in the drops
3. I equally ride in the hoods and the drops

The V3.0 has shock-cord and a cord-lock to secure the pogies to your bars and to seal out the wind.

POGIE LITE INSTALLATION VIDEOS

Installation Steps

1. I mostly ride in the hoods - Slide the collar-side of Pogie Lite over your drops and up over the hoods. You'll want the gusset part of the pogie to be more toward the curve of the drops as by the end of the drops. This allows the Pogie Lite to be pivoted forward more giving you more hand room.

Once pivoted in the right spot, Pull the knot and cinch with cord-lock. With the excess shock-cord, wrap it around your bars and "lock" the knot over your cord-lock to secure the Pogie Lite.

2. I mostly ride in the drops - Slide the gusset-side of Pogie Lite over your drops and up past the curve of the bar ensuring the Pogie Lite won't affect your braking and shifting. Once positioned in the right spot, pull the knot and cinch with cord-lock. With the excess shock-cord, wrap it around your bars and "lock" the knot over your cord-lock to secure the Pogie Lite. You'll now be able to ride on the drops with your hand inside the Pogie Lite AND you can still use your hoods.

3. I equally ride in the hoods and the drops - This is tricky to explain in text. It the same process as the "hood installation, but when you slide the collar-side of Pogie Lite over your drops you want to slide your drop in between the collar shock-cord and then pull up over the hoods. This allows the collar shock cord to loosely secure the Pogie Lite to the bars. If you did it right, your bars will fit right in the collar channel split.

You may want to cinch down the collar shock-cord down just a bit and you are done.. From there, you can use your hoods and since you didn't have to cinch down the gusset, you'll be able to stick your hands in the gusset area on the drops (albeit a smaller opening that the collar area). It's a beautiful thing to use them this way!

This simple installation allows you to slide the Pogie Lite in different positions:

Collar Adjustment - Most users leave the collar un-cinched unless it is really cold or raining. It's easy to pull the knot to cinch up the area around your wrist.

You can also fold the collar inside to decrease the coverage around your wrists.

Be sure you can always exit the Pogie Lite easily and safely by not over-cinching.

PRO-TIP #1- Don't cinch the cord-lock really tight. Cinch it down about 3/4 the way and leave it a bit loose and THEN wrap your shock-cord around your bar and "lock" the knot over your cord-lock. This allows you to place the cord-lock in a position you choose so the cord-lock won't be digging into your palms if you want to ride int he drops where the cinch-point is.

PRO-TIP #2 Getting too hot inside the Pogie? Slide the Pogie Lite back a bit on the bars to only cover your knuckles or slide it back all the way past the shifters totally exposing your hands if not needed. just be sure you have the gusset cinched down tight enough where the Pogie Lite won't fall off (warning - this has happened before to a handful of users)

How do I install Pogie Lites on Straight bars?

The V3.0 has shock-cord and a cord-lock to secure the pogies to your bars and to seal out the wind.

Installation - Slide the gusset-side of Pogie Lite over your grips and controls (brake lever and shifter).

Pull the knot and cinch with cord-lock. With the excess shock-cord, wrap it around your bars and cable to "clam-shell" the Pogie Lite to stop the wind and cold from getting in.

The "lock" the knot over your cord-lock to hold everything in place.

This simple installation allows you to slide the Pogie Lite in different positions:

PRO-TIP #1- Figure 8 the shock-cord around your cables and bars to seal out the wind even better.

PRO-TIP #2 - Don't cinch the cord-lock really tight. Cinch it down about 3/4 the way and leave it a bit loose and THEN wrap your shock-cord around your bars and cables and "lock" the knot over your cord-lock. This allows you to place the cord-lock under the bars or toward the front so the cord-lock won't be digging into your palms if you want to ride atop the bars in a different riding position.

PRO-TIP #3- Getting too hot inside the Pogie? loosen the gusset shock-cord some to allow some air into the pogie to control the temperature. OR... slide the Pogie Lite back a bit on the bars to only cover your knuckles or slide it back all the way past the shifters totally exposing your hands if not needed. You can cinch it down rolled all the way back too for storage.

How do I install Pogie Lites on Jones bars?

Follow the same process as the Straight bars. Most Jones bars tend to be longer as do the grips.

POGIE LITE INSTALLATION VIDEOS

The V3.0 version has a little bigger cross-section dimensions that the V2.0 which was done for a little extra thumb shifting room inside the pogie.

Scott, creator of Pogie Lites, primarily uses un-cut Jones Bars and long chunky grips as his primary winter transportation and they work great. (His bike setup is shown in the Pogie Lite Product Page photos)

What bars/shifters/cables won't Pogie Lites work with?

Pogie Lites are not a good fit for shifters with external cable routing from drop-bar hoods.

Pogie Lites as well as most pogies on the market work by slipping the pogie over your control and grips and then cinching them down some way to secure them, an also stop the wind and cold from getting in.

If your cables don't follow the lines of your bars, then Pogie Lites may not be for you.

Sometimes the cables have enough flex where a Pogie Lite can be installed without binding your cables.

Sometimes the cables are so spread out it makes it hard to seal off the gusset area too.

Easy way to tell - Tie a string with a 6 inch opening circumference. Then put it over your bars to the point where you would cinch it down. If you can do that with no issues, then the Pogie Lite should be a good fit.

Note - We will not make custom modifications for special bars and cable routing.

Cleaning and Care

Can I wash Pogie Lites?

You can. Wash on gentle or delicate with cold water and lay flat to dry.

After a few washes, if you notice the water not beading up as much, just spray the outside with a water-proof spray to get back the water repellency.

Care Tips

The fabric is rip-stop and pretty tough, but still can be punctured or ripped.

  • * Be careful laying you bike down on or against rough surfaces where the Pogie fabric may get pinched.
  • * Thorns and branches may snag the Pogie if you are on a gnarly trail.
  • * Remove them before transporting on a bike rack. Winds at highway speeds are powerful and can rip a pogie right off.
  • * If you rip them, they can be patched. We recommend sewing a patch on vs. heat=pressed as that can melt the fabric if temps are too high. You can also use duct/gorilla tape too.
  • * Don't get them stolen. Everyone wants a pair.

Storage

How should I store my Pogie Lites on the bike?

ON BIKE
just fold them back on your bars and store them right in place. Then, if it rains or the night/morning-time chill gets ya, roll them back onto your bars.

YEAH. It's that easy.

How should I store my Pogie Lites off the bike?

OFF BIKE
You see how small they fold up.

If you don’t need them, take them off and put them a jersey pocket, tail bag, frame/feed bag or pannier.

There is no proper way to fold them.

YEAH. It's that easy.

Why are my hands are still cold when I use Pogie Lites?

Many factors play into this. In the end, it all depends on the a multitude of controls - the temperature, wind chill, your output (e.g. how hard are you working?), glove selection, bar/wrap set up and your general body type/health.

Body Heat - You gotta be riding to generate body heat for your fingers. A leisurely ride to the coffee shop on your E-bike isn't going to build up enough heat.

Poor Circulation - Some folks have poor circulation in their hands and feet making it difficult to keep their extremities warm. Consider using a warmer glove or hand warmers.

Sweat - If you are perspiring inside your gloves, you are eventually going to get cold.

Conduction - Are you getting cold from the inside out? Your bars, the bar wrap and levers play a big part of keeping warm when it's cold out.

Aluminum is 30 times more conductive than Carbon! That’s a huge difference in how much heat is drawn away from your hands.

Is your bars wrapped once? twice?
Do your levers have covers on them?

See the "Why are my Hand So Cold" FAQ.

Glove Selection - We see folks using way too heavy of gloves when they ride and especially when they use Pogie Lites.

Temperature Control - We mention this in many FAQs and Features. The KEY is keeping your hands on the verge of being warm. Once you feel them getting warm, pull your hands out of the Pogie and ride with your hands atop the Pogie for 30 seconds or a minute or two or five. Then repeat the process as needed. The ability to control your bike atop the Pogie Lites is what makes them special.

Why am I toasty warm on Bike #1 and ice-cold on Bike #2? (CONDUCTION)

This was a Facebook post that Scott posted March 6th 2022. It may help you make some decisions how you bike is set up.

~~~
WHY ARE MY HANDS SO COLD?
I Rode a different bike twice this week and both times had a hard time
keeping my hands warm. Temps were in the low 30's with a little wind and ride time was 2 hours. Both times I used Pogie Lites and my normal
go-to gloves that I always wear on my go-to bike.
Why am I toasty warm on Bike #1 and ice-cold on Bike #2 ???
Bike #1 My go-to bike - Carbon Jones Bars with really chunky grips
Bike #2 My SS# - Aluminum Bars - Single tape wrapped, no extra padding
Gloves - North Face medium weight wind-stop gor-tex (10 years old)
THE ANSWER:
CONDUCTION - the transfer of cold through the aluminum bars with very
little insulation is MUCH greater than the cold transfer through carbon
bars and chunky grips.
A little research showed that Aluminum is 30 times more conductive than Carbon! That’s a huge difference in how much heat is drawn away from
your hands.
Just something to think about as you ride in the cold. The bar type, grips and wrap play a BIG part in keeping your hands warm.
In my case, I need to wear a heavier glove with more padding when I ride Bike #2 in cold weather.
The Pogie Lites did their job, but they cannot control the cold dissipation from the bars. #LessonLearned
How come they look so droopy?
We chose packability and flexibility over rigidity. If you want rigidity, there are plenty of other pogies out there.
It's a 'give and take' option and we've found the Pogie Lite design to match our riding styles the best.
Most pogies on the market are pretty rigid and have a more complex mounting system. This allows your hands to enter and exit the Pogie easily, but does not allow to shift, brake and steer over the top of the pogie, have multiple hand positions or have ability to roll the pogie back on the bars or roll them up in your jersey pocket.
Want a more rigid opening? We offer accessory tubing that can be installed in the collar shock-cord channel.
Also see the "WHOOPTIE Scoop" explanation in the FAQ below for ways to enter the Pogie Lite easier.
What is the WHOOPTIE Scoop?
The WHOOPTIE Scoop is the term we coined that explains the scooping motion your hands take to enter the Pogie Lite.
If your collar is flopped downward, scoop you hand in an upward motion to enter the Pogie. After a few times, it becomes second nature just like unclipping from clipless pedals.
Why don't you fleece line the inside?
We don't feel it is necessary. We use Pogie Lites into the single digits and alter gloves if we need something warmer, which we rarely do.
We also use Pogie Lites in the middle of a Summer rain, and in a muddy rides/races where the fleece would just get soggy, wet and muddy.
Pogie Lites are made to be packable and flexible. Simplicity is key.
I lost one Pogie. Can you make me only one?
Yes, We have done this in the past. Contact us and we'll work out the details.
Can I leave a Review or provide feedback?
